Reminder... you already have what it takes

Since a young age,

We look up to our loved ones.

Mimicking their every move

And wanting to be just like them.

Our parents,

We aspire to be

Our siblings are our biggest role models.

As you sit a table one morning,

With you mother

You ask to put on some of her makeup.

She gives you a small mirror

And only some lip gloss,

But you don't care

Because now you are just like your mom,

Copying her.

What you do not know

Is that you do not need makeup to be beautiful

Because your natural beauty is perfect.

You feel proud to look like her

And wear her makeup

Because now,

You feel pretty.

The author's comments:

This poem exemplifies the hardships that a modern day female could encounter day to day. As a woman myself, I am faced with the struggles of trying to live up to an expectation to be "perfect" and wear makeup in order to be considered "pretty" by society. Although makeup does make some people feel beautiful and confident, it does not define the word "beauty" or make someone any more or less attractive. I wrote this poem in hope to spread positivity and kindness throughout our world so that everyone feels worthy and included.
