A Letter
Sometimes
You just need to write a letter
A letter that you know will never be read
By anyone other than yourself
Sometimes
You need to write a letter
Then hide it afterwards,
Under your bed, in the closet, at
The bottom of a drawer
Sometimes
You need to write a letter
Then promise yourself
That you’ll burn it once you finish
But you never really do
Sometimes
You need to write a letter
A letter that no one will
Ever read or see or know exists
A letter that holds your deepest darkest secrets
Sometimes
You need to write a letter
And cry a little before you write it
And cry a little while
But trust me,
You will not cry afterwards
Sometimes
You feel silenced
You want to tell someone
And maybe for now
Telling a pencil and paper is enough
Sometimes
The person after 'dear' is your future self,
Maybe it's your friend,
Your parent,
Or the dirt where you bury it,
Or the ashes it becomes
Sometimes
You need to write something
You need to press your thoughts on paper
Get your feelings away from you
To corrode elsewhere
Sometimes
You just want to write a letter
A letter to nobody
A letter to everybody
A letter for the world
that
no one
will ever read.

I wrote this poem because for me, writing is how I find expression. Most of the time I write not to explain something to someone else, but to explain some part of my own self. I hope you enjoyed this piece.
