The library belongs

to the shadows now.

They drape thick and sticky

as cobwebs on the corners

of the shelves,

dancing through the empty

aisles hand in slick black hand,

dripping down the walls

in pools of molten ink.

The books dream dry, dead dreams,

wedged in their wooden tombs,

while memories ferment with sour dust,

and the tattered ghosts of laughter

decay in the dark.

The iron chains of silence

hang as heavy as the weight

of slowly withering words.
