My last name,
the name of my family
the name of my ancestors,
the name that bridges
oceans and generations
in two syllables,
the name that connects
past and future
in six letters,
the name that echoes
the splash of waves
at the prow of a ship,
and the bustling crowds
of Ellis Island,
the name that glistens
with the promise of a new country,
as fresh and perfect and untainted
as new snow,
the name that is the last
fragile thread linking
my parents together,
unbroken still.
