August 2022 Fiction Contest: When Poppies Were White

Boom.
There goes the first bomb.
Boom.
And the second.
Boom, boom.
They just keep coming, pelting down on our trenches like fatal fireworks.
“I love you, Poppy”, I think as I run to take cover “and our children”. The ringing in my ears won’t stop, the jangling in my head won’t cease. Boom, boom, boom.
“ Do you remember the days when you and I were together and happy? Do you remember the times before the war?” The bombs thunder at the speed of my racing heart, in tandem with my crippled core.
BOOM! The fatal blow.
“Take care, my love.”
