Cruel World
I am too trusting,
So you devour me bit by bit.
Little by little,
You tear at my exterior,
Until I am nothing.
Protect your heart,
The world has claws.
Your heart is too precious for them.
They do not deserve you.
It’s a cruel world out there.
I am an open book full of secrets.
They say everyone has a price.
I don’t think they’re wrong.
You found mine.
You destroyed me.
Sometimes I wish I could reverse the hands of time.
Time that is erasing us.
Time that is running too fast for us.
Time that has destroyed the parts of ourselves that were innocent.
Things were so much easier then.
The world around us is consuming us.
We’re fighting the good in us,
Trying to be something we’re not,
Dancing on the graves of our innocence,
Something we’ll never be again.
Protect your heart,
The world has claws.
Your heart is too precious for them.
They do not deserve you.
It’s a cruel world out there.
Cruel world, I opened my heart to you.
I fought for a world that did nothing more than destroy me.
Yet everywhere I look.
I see hope that we can be so much,
It’s a cruel world we’ve created, but maybe it’s not too late.
