In the Audience
you bask in the stage light
I’m frozen with stage fright
with bated breath I see you take your place
edges glimmering like a diamond, your strobe lights
smother my face
you sound like an angel, do you know?
voice painting landscapes, every peak and valley,
all the creeks and forests, a cacophony of
everything and everywhere and I’ll get lost in your world through every nook and cranny
so badly my heart beats in it’s little gilded cage,
Innocent and fluttering with rage
can’t you see I want you?
toying with my feelings, and you simply don’t know it
You’re the most I’ll ever want, and the best I’ll never have

I wanted to write something that symbolizes the frustration that comes with having an interest in someone, only for it to not be reciprocated, especially because the other person doesn’t realize your feelings. I feel like this is an experience that so many young people go through, especially because figuring out the world includes dealing with heartbreak as well.
