The lighter flicks on

And an ember glow emerges

I watch in wonder

As it dances in the wind

Seductively dragging its hands

Up the sides of its waist

It flickers in the dark

A fleeting glance of growth

Before the light vanishes

Leaving only the smoke

That I breathe in willingly

Desperately

The tendrils of smoke

Wrap loosely around my neck

My head hung back in content

Over the metal rails

Holding me from the universe

Watching the rain pour from the stars

As they cried for their mothers

The water runs from your face

Down your shirt

And pool beneath your feet

Yet the smoke

Continues to heaven

From the cigarette

Lit between your lips

The author's comments:

This piece highlights the juxtaposition between teen rebellion and the desire to remain innocent. There is a part of every kid that is determined to remain the child that they are as they navigate new experiences. However, it is just as important to explore as it is to remain true to yourself.
