The heart is like a phoenix
There is a time when love must die
Then resurrected from the ashes
It returns to open sky

But the phoenix is not bound by chains
And birds are free to fly away
Disdain for letting go is kept
But never sees the light of day

The ashes always left to remain
To remind my heart of better days
And a pang of sadness tries to impale
Me with its dagger, unsheathed, when I fell

I fell from the highs, straight to the bottom
To the pits of despair and beyond
And my heart, it did die
But I somehow found a way to grow fond

And my heart fell again
Rising above, to fly in the sky
Up from the ashes, the phoenix did find
That my heart lives again, my phoenix is alive

The author's comments:
I've been reading a lot of 17th century English poetry recently, which I find quite beautiful because they really pay attention to rhyme patterns and their words are so eloquent. I wanted to try to incorporate some of that into my own, because poetry to me is art.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness.
Robert Frost

I love this poem it's great and the rhythm really shows. I enjoy knowing how much care you put into your work.
