Thirteen
Just stop reading this and leave me alone, ok?
Can’t anyone just give me a break?
I am growing up! I want more freedom!
Why can’t I shop at the mall?
Why can’t I get more money?
Why can’t I talk on the phone for 2 hours?
Why can’t I go to Paul’s party and come home at 11PM?
Why can’t I stay up late?
Why won’t anyone let me make my own choices?
And what are YOU lookin’ at?
You don’t need to tell me, ok?
You think I LIKE the pimples?
Oh I tried the creams
And the ointments
And the scrubs
Cleansers
Face masks
Toothpaste
And there it is, more
Red, blotchy
Big, flaming
Zits
EATING ME ALIVE!!!!!
But do YOU care?
No, why would you?
‘Cause you’d just say what everyone says,
“Aw, hunny, when I was thirteen….”
Oh just don’t even GET there!
I know all that growing up stuff.
So don’t need to lecture, I know
How much it sucks
To be trapped
Like a bird in a cage
Who cannot stay there
Yet cannot fly either.
To be angry
At the world
For reasons I would find realistic
And YOU wouldn’t.
To feel
That no one understands
That no one cares
That the world’s against you
And you’re against the world.
But don’t worry about me (and I bet you’re not)
I’m hanging in there
And if you can survive
I guess I can too.
