I don’t normally do this
So don’t expect much

I’m gonna write

I won’t change the world
With my words

Or write the sequel
To the enormously influencing “door slam heard “‘round the world”
Like Ibsen first had

I’m gonna write

I won’t be the next Shakespeare
But to be honest,
Who could?

I’m not looking to please anyone
Only myself

I’m gonna write

I’m not searching for some kind of life altering experience
My only hope is that I don’t have a mental breakdown
Unbeknownst to me
And turn out like Esther Greenwood

And I really don’t wanna
Become reliant
Upon the Jesus Prayer
Like Franny in Franny and Zooey

I’m gonna write

I don’t really care if this poem
Doesn’t sound like one, or rhymes
I don’t do that

I’m not very good at pulling out the “inner me”
So this is pretty much as good as it gets

I’m gonna write

I hope that you’d like this
But if you don’t
That’s okay
I’m just writing to write


And if you have a problem
With me saying what I wanna say
Take it up with someone else

Because I don’t wanna hear it

I’m not trying to be mean
It’s just that for the first time
I’m going to say what I think

And it’s going to be honest

I’m gonna write

I hope that you’d like this
And appreciate the new me
But I can’t really expect that from you anymore

I don’t believe I ever could
