Listening to Pain
We listen
 to the cries of
 children, women,
 and men in the angry
 places of desertion
 and hunger and thirst.

 We listen to the shots
 or innocents being killed,
to the shots of hopeless war.
 To the booms and bangs
 of beings losing their lives.

 We listen to the
 sounds of the animals,
 being neglected, hurt,
 and hunted by our own.

 We listen to the effects
 of our reckless risks
 and stupid enhancements
 of our weapons.

 We listen to
 the whistling of our
 returning of tainted air
 into the planet so kind
 to give us refuge.

 We listen to the
cry of pain from the world.
