If you could be God's worst enemy or nothing, which would you choose?

At 3:30 in the morning
I left the door ajar
and turned down the music
as I fell asleep
so that I could hear the baby crying
because the sound reminds me
why mothers suffer
and children grow up
and men die –
so that there can be babies crying
at 3:30 in the morning.

I wrote this after spending the night at my aunt's house and listening to my baby cousin cry all night. My cousin was born around the same time someone I knew died, and I started thinking that if people didn't die, there couldn't be babies. The crying didn't sound so bad after that.
