Breaking the Circle
Around and around goes
The woman’s life
Filled with broken promises and lies.
Beaten and humiliated
Since she was born,
And yet she had never
Thought of speaking a word.
Around and around she goes,
First with her father,
Now with her husband,
All she can think is
“Here it goes again.”
Around and around she goes,
Looking at the roses
That have long turned black,
Covering the bruises
That run along her back.
Around and around she goes,
Waiting to wake up
From the nightmare
That has always been,
Wondering if she can
ever really win.
Around and around she goes,
Looking at her newborn baby girl,
She wants to give her the entire world.
But here comes her husband,
And she is filled with fear,
She wants to keep him
from coming near.
Around and around
Her head is spinning.
A life full of horror
keeps on spilling
From her memory,
Enough to make her want to scream.
And then the spinning stops,
All is well.
Her bags are packed,
The taxi’s waiting.
Her baby’s in her arms
And all she can see
Is bright yellow sunshine
everywhere around her.
Finally, the circle’s breaking.
She’s leaving now
