Fork in the road
I’d take the road less traveled
If only I could know where it goes
How did I get here?
Why am I standing all alone
At these crossroads
Watching the ghosts of yesterday
Fade their smoky selves
Into the future?
Two paths ahead,
One way to go
And there’s no memory lane
Or yellow brick road
I’m hanging by a thread
With both feet on the ground
Halfway in, halfway out
Soon the thread’s going to fray
And the ground’s going to shake
But I’m still here
Can’t make up my mind
The road sign vanished long ago
Into the thin air of wrong decisions
Wrong choices, dark pathways
As I linger
The footprints in the dust become visible
One road is splattered with them
Multitudes of apathetic marks
Headed into the land of
Who-knows-where
And the other has
A single set of solitary tracks from long ago
Their imprints outlined with meaning
No longer is a road sign needed
To tell me which way to go
My past is thrust behind me as I
Place my feet within those lone prints
Who walked this road before me?
There is only one way
I’ll ever find out
