clean slate
Purity, not from redemption
But just there
Natural as the winter snow
No steps taken forward
Nor disturbed drift
A fresh white sheet tucking the earth in for sleep
To sleep, and to dream
Of greener days, of whiter haze, of falling forever
But there is no rest
The sheet is stripped
Sleep disturbed
As drifts are shoveled, steps crunch black
And our clean slate is wiped with dirty hands
Business as usual.
