A Friend Once Lost
Crackling and sizzling under the watchful eye of the night
Popping and sparkling with such delight
Gray smog heavy in the air
It licks, it snatches, it curls my hair
The heat is oppressive and pushes down on my heart
It makes shadows on my face like some dark art
Red, orange, and yellow
Strings plucked from a cello
Take me, take me, take me, I plead
Something unexplainable has come over me
As I light you up and watch you slip away
I think of all those times I let you play
I should have been careful; you should have taken the time
As I light your fire I light mine
Crackling, sizzling, please take flight
Don’t turn around, oh watchful eye of the night
