On Tuesday morning carrot awoke
All happy and about
For today was the day of Ms. Maple’s party
He would be dipped in ranch, chewed, crunched and swallowed
But then when it got closer to party time
Carrot grew sad
He realized apples and oranges and grapes
Were being placed above him
With a beautiful green satin cloth underneath them
Carrot didn’t believe his eyes
He was going to be eaten, not them
He chuckled at the apples
But when the apples looked back at him
They glared at him with disgust
Their eyes were swollen up with hatred
Carrot slowly blinked
Then he saw a crowd of people come in
He smiled and jumped
Eat me! Eat me!
But no
One after another
They reached for the apples and oranges and grapes
Carrot kept standing proud
Determined he would be eaten
Then, he heard a guest say
Oh, Ms. Maple, you have a piece of trash on your floor
Let me get it for you
Within seconds, carrot was in the guest’s hand
Please, he begged as his voice cracked
He heard Ms. Maple say
Oh, now what was a moldy old carrot doing on my floor?
Carrot was thrown in the garbage
After the party, Ms. Maple took the trash outside
But, the bag broke
Water had weighed it down too much
Ms. Maple examined the bag
They were tears
Carrot sobbed
Tears
