late for the ball
I come running
dressed in my finest silks
the prettiest there is
I'm sure

I enter the palace
full of hopes
sure the prince
will pick me

we dance
around and around
he smiles at me
then, suddenly,
he stops and stares
I turn, and there she is
prettier than me

she sweeps down the steps
and pushes me aside
I turn
and leave
the prince didn't smile like that for me
