I wish I lived in Alaska,
Some place like Alaska,
where the days are brief
and the nights stretch on

Where no one would have reason
to swell with inquiries,
to shake from security,
and ask Why was I
still asleep past noon
blind to opportunities of day;
counting ladybugged leaves,
absorbing buttered tea,
amidst the swallowed Sun

I wish I lived in Alaska,
Some place like Alaska,
because there, I hear,
the days are brief
and the nights stretch on
and in Alaska,
I wouldn’t have to look them in the eyes
and tell them It’s not the dark I’m afraid of,

It’s the light
