Daydream Story
She's staring across the room
eyes bleary; unfocused
but if you follow their gaze
you'll see they always stay
on that beautiful; captivating boy
who's bounding around the room
X
her mind is creating a story
where they're the main characters
like
[Romeo & Juliet] [Paris & Helen] [Gatsby & Daisy]
where they get...
well certainly not 'Happily-ever-after'
but
not 'sadly-never-ever'
X
she's watching them court
they go on walks in the moonlight
and they spend days browsing bookstores
drinking coffee at quaint little cafes
watching the sunset while swathed in blankets
with a thermos full of hot chocolate
X
she watches him drag her to football games
and throw her in the pool
she watches herself shove a pie in his face
and drag him to vintage clothing stores
she watches snowball fight
and their failed attempts at cooking
X
they go to Paris and Milan
and then she watches him propose
on national television
and she's so embarrassed
but ohso pleased
{she's says yes of course}
X
they get married in a blur of
pink silk and bubbles and bliss
and all she can really remember
is saying “I do.”
and the rattle of the tin cans as they drove off
X
fast-forward
4 or 5 years
they're sitting on a park bench
watching a little girl run around
dirty blonde hair hangs in sheets down her back
and honey gold eyes
sparkle and shine with joy
X
fast-forward again
they're standing in front of a college
hugging a boy with jet black hair
and jade green eyes
tears glazing their eyes
as they drive away
X
fast-forward one more time
they're sitting on a porch
all old and wrinkled
hands intertwined; rings still gleaming silver in the sun
their family scattered around the yard
and happiness leaking from every corner of the house
X
the teacher calls her name
she jerks in surprise
her beautiful dream; that wonderful life
drifting away
her eyes start to follow him again
and he looks her way
a smile gracing his features
and she can still hope that their story
will happen one day
X
