Mirrors
I gaze across the table, blinded by mirrors,
A see-through reflection tests me – how much more you can fake?
I see a hundred of the same people, not one smiling at me
So many days, decades, dates forgotten; is it that hard to be opaque?
Mornings I lay there, last night’s tears on the sheets
Wondering where the days have passed, some come patiently
And some all at once, I just want to take back my steps
And drop that crown on some one more saintly than me
I’m the one tree that reached far too left,
Others made their own forests and stranded me while on
Their path to Beauty and Rightness, but my leaves,
They can’t touch the sun, and all I get is an uninterested yawn
“Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Tell me who I am supposed to be.”
He told me to look at him.
“I’m looking, but I can’t find myself,” I said.
“Look for the one who stands out,” the mirror spoke.
“Why did you try so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?”
