run
but he cannot. he rubs his
sore feet and cannot move,
stunned from fleeing.

breathe
but he cannot. he coughs and
wheezes, out of
breath from running.

fight
but he cannot. the creature’s spidery
legs creep and crawl down the rickety
stairs towards its midnight snack.

scream
but he cannot. the poison seeps into
his veins, breathing with hell’s
everlasting blaze.

wake
but he cannot. for he is trapped
in his nightmare and is
rooted to the spot.

The author's comments:
Fear is a powerful feeling that is rooted in the imagination. A man is fatally wounded by a spider and on the brink of death... or is he?

Your poem sounds powerful. It made me want to run with this guy who is scared of the spider. Keep up the good work!

Great poem! It makes me wonder who is more scared, the spider or the man. I love it!
