"Nothing gold can stay" -Robert Frost

Roars of hate
shake the gates of hell,
this is war

Mud sucks through
the soles in our boots,
mingling with our blood,
pulling us

down

down

down

Thoughts scream in their box,
never to be heard in the chaos
and gunshots and cries of agony
that swell like tidal waves in a sea of frost

Weak and alone we will all fall,
bodies lay crumpled,
bullets for hearts,
medals and scars

Until few remain,
lone, battered soldiers
on the edge,
with nothing left to mourn
because everyone's hands are covered in blood,

this is war

I had to write a poem for a project in English class about the book we read, 'The Things They Carried'.
