Nightmare of the Smile and Fence
Inside the jumbled mess I see
A pair of eyes black back at me
I think I’m dreaming in my sleep
Because I see in monochromacy
I thought I saw a smile
Or maybe nothing all the while
But as a die is three or six
It could have been a frown of vile
A turning of my view
Doesn’t change my color hue
Doesn’t change my black or white
Just a change from hope to blue
Landing on the home defense
My eye detects a picket fence
It’s shadow creeps and comes
My heart fills with this suspense
It turns into a crooked grin
The one of old there again
My dream plays a song
Eerily played by violin
I scream, pull, and shake
I hold my head because the ache
Nightmares never hurt a soul
And then I realize, I’m wide awake
