This is a literature class, and that's what writers do. We put pen to paper in times of devastating tragedy. And we just try and make sense of it. Maybe we'll find clarity in some of those words. Maybe we'll find peace. - One Tree Hill

The first day
Seeing new faces
A new chapter in your life begins
With all of its uncertainties

All standing four feet tall
With your big backpack and lunch box
Anxiously waiting by yourself
When someone catches your eye

Everyone becomes friends
No popularity contest here

Learning to be kind to others
Sharing on the play ground

Learning to laugh
Singing through the day
Having a big smile on your face
Not wanting to leave

No judging with looks
Or any bad influences

Or society telling you to believe and act a certain way
We all are the same
And everyone can play the game

Where everyone comes together
Despite their different skin color

Back when it was your first day
Where everyone was the same
Where hands would join
And everyone was friends

And everything was easier
Where this was the place where everything was better and everything was safe

As we send our young children to the world
Who don't know any different
Where being yourself is the hardest thing someone can face
In this stereotypical world

And here in Kindergarten
Is just the beginning
To know that this will all change
And this was the place where everything was better and everything was safe

The author's comments:
I was inspired after volunteering in a Kindergarten at a local school. I saw how kindergarteners wrapped each other up with so much love and kindness. Sure, a few arguments were shared, but all in all, it makes me remember how back in kindergarten, life seemed so much easier.
