&ldquo;I don&#039;t want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I&#039;ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death!&rdquo;<br /> -Anne Frank

A slight tug in your stomach
A glance, A glance
Around the room

Like seams pulling apart,
All of your armor gone
All of it

Skating on thin ice and
Breathing in thin air
One move too far to either side
And tragedy may occur
The air helps not;
Only to make every thought cloudy
Every new idea a nuisance

You are open to anything not unusual
In a universe so tired, a universe slowing down
With a world out of place

It always shows, you know
When you are not in the right place,
At the right time,
With the right people

In that moment,
You are
Like a soprano among altos,
Like a crow among swans,
Like a caterpillar among butterflies.

Your armor is gone,
But you are
Not ready, Not ready
To be so unshielded

A weapon arises
Out of the panic
It isn't a hard decision
And it makes you feel like you belong

A lash at the girl in the corner,
Gone are the smiles for her,
They are now held by you
A stab at the boy who holds the flag
People now look to you,
You holding the symbol of power

On the outside, you are
Like an alto among altos,
Like a swan among swans,
Like a butterfly among butterflies

But inside,
You are still
The soprano
The crow
The caterpillar

Only now, your insides are tattooed
With your mother's name:
Insecurity.
