What is a hero?

Is a hero a knight in shining armor?
Who slays the ferocious fire-breathing beast,
Saves the damsel in distress,
And takes her hand in marriage?

What is a hero?

Is a hero a nerd by day?
Who runs around in tights at night?
Who can fly, lift heavy things
And always give the criminals their comeuppance?

What is a hero?

Is a hero a person, who dons a hat,
Made of plastics and composites,
Grabs a hose, and runs into a burning building
All to save a life from the hungering flames?

What is a hero?

Is a hero someone who’ll die,
For an ideal, or for their country?
Who’ll march into the trials of war
And release bullets that kill?

What is a hero?

I believe a hero is all of these things,
And more, for when you study heroism
There is one underlying similarity
That is that heroes do what is right
Even when that may not be clear
Even when that may be difficult
Even when that may require sacrifices
Even when the hero may not want to do the right thing

Now that is what a hero is.

The author's comments:
I wish I had some noble reason for writing this, but if I said that it’d be a total lie. Really it was Tim Kring’s television series, Heroes, where I drew my inspiration. Regardless of my sources, I think the message that I convey here rings true everywhere, be it on TV, in a poem, or in reality.
