To Be Deaf
Imagine to be deaf
to your soul mate. To never hear
 your lover’s words
 of promise and adoration.
 To never hear those words
 “I love you”
 resonate and fill you with
 that joy of ages.

 Imagine to be deaf
to your peers. To never hear
 their complaints about
 your appearance and attitude.
 To never hear those words
 “You’re an idiot”
 clang about and wound
 your spirit.

 Imagine to be deaf
to your family. To never hear
 your parents words
 of encouragement and praise.
 To never hear those words
 “We love you”
 flow in ease and
 help you sleep at night.

 Imagine to be deaf
to the world. To never hear
 Your fellow man‘s cures
 and screams in this hell.
 To never hear those words
 “Please help us”
 drag you into our pit
 of guilt and sin.

 Imagine to be deaf
to all things. To never hear
 the pain or joy
 that follows our speech.
 To never have that feeling
 of acceptance in the world.
 And to always miss
 those vital moments.
