His Heart
No man’s land was
 needless to say, deserted.
 The landscape and horizon were
 parched brown and blasted
 by an unforgiving sun.
It looked as if an explosion
 had terminated all organic life.
But no, the rocks and valleys
told, not of a swift detonation
but of a slow grinding of sulfur
over all that was good and green
 in this man’s heart by
 exterior forces of love.
