"To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live." - Garth Stein, The Art of Racing in the Rain

Oh to be the leaf,
at the top of the tree!
To witness the rain,
like the birds see.

To watch the first drop,
come tumbling down.
To ponder the distance,
from the sky to the ground.

To reach up and capture,
the first rays of sunlight.
To soak in their warmth,
as closest one might.

To befriend the stars,
the clouds and the sky.
To witness the sunsets,
from so very high.

To tease the low branches,
vines, and leaves;
Who long to be,
as high up as me.

And at summer's end,
when we all start to fall,
My journey would surely,
be the grandest of all.

I'd twirl and I'd swirl,
I'd flutter in glee;
If I were the leaf,
at the top of the tree.

I wrote this while casually relaxing on my trampoline one day. I was admiring the brilliant sunshine and the summer air as the tops of the trees caught my attention and inspired me to write this!
