Silence Trap
Maybe you’ll find your silence in your souped-up Chevy
Ripping through suburbia
Past deer crossing signs
and Angry, fist shaking mothers
Maybe in your father’s whiskey
That last damn sip
You’re funnier! You’re cooler! You’re loved.
You’re passed out.
Maybe in that pounding rhapsody and lightshow
Boom. Boom. Boom.
The bass obscures your heartbeat.
Maybe silence is the prize in this labyrinth you’ve constructed.
Or in this beauty pageant you unwittingly signed up for.
Where did you put your silence?
Change the radio station, it has to on somewhere.
Turn up the volume! Perhaps you just can’t hear it.
Maybe your silence will be in Brooklyn barbershops
Or log cabins frozen by snow, warmed by hearth
I can only tell you that I found my silence
By finally letting the ink in my veins
Flow onto paper.
