Holding on to Hope
Darkness. Secrecy. Fear. The bare, damp apartment is no longer a place of safety, warm memories, and love. It is a place to hide. The children are weeping. The adults are praying for dear life. In the corner they all crouch, trying to block out the sound of gunshots on the streets. They try to remain quiet, to hold on to an imaginary shred of hope that they keep in their hearts. Finally, the terrible sound of squeaky, black boots marching up the stairs fills their ears. The mother crouches down to tuck the Star of David necklace under her daughter's dress. The hard, cruel knock comes banging on the cold door. Tears escape the eyes of the poor, crowded family. The men behind the door scream to open up immediately. The father slowly place his hand on the door knob... A life filled with love and freedom can seem like an illusion in the darkest of times. But we will persevere. Because, in the end, hate will cower in shame and defeat to make room for the light that radiates off true, pure hearts.
