Behind the Glass
Like a fish in a fishbowl
Like a bird in a cage
Like the lion at the zoo
who paces with rage
Like the buffalo at the safari
Like the ants in the farm
Like the parrot in the enclosure
who raises an alarm
These animals are alone
These animals watch life go by
These animals are broken
These animals and I
I walk down the hallway
I keep my head down
Everyone is talking
No one notices my frown
Absentmindedly, I talk
I laugh with my peers
The thing they don’t know
Is I’m not really here
This isn’t me talking
This isn’t me at all
I’m standing behind the glass
No one will catch me if I fall
Therapist number one
Tried her best
There’s not much you can do
About a second-grade pest
Let’s skip to number four and five
They completely screwed things up
Maybe that’s why
I eventually was locked up
I’m on number fourteen now
She’s not doing much better
Mom says she might help
If only I would let her
No one really knows me
No one sees the mess inside
I guess that’s why I’m behind the glass
‘Cuz it’s the only place to hide
