Forgotten Sufferage
We have suffered through hell
And fought our way back into humanity
We have been in the deepest despair
And made it to the other side
The deaths
The jailed
The cruelties
They are finally justified
There are cheers of victory
But as years go by they fade
And now
They seem to be forgotten
What we fought for
Now is nothing more than a faded memory
What we fought for
Is now a born right for our children
Our children
Disrespectful of their given rights
Blind to their history
We have died
Slaved
Suffered
We have suffered for you
Our children
Our grandchildren
Our great-grandchildren
You were our motivation
Through the pain and grief
To gain you your rights
Yet you think nothing of it
You let all that was sacrificed perish
With not as much as a glimpse of remorse
We opened, to you, the Door of Opportunity
Yet you turn it down for a chance at “Thugin’ it”
We rid you of discrimination
Yet you enjoy throwing it at yourselves
We finally burned that cursed word
That devil of a word
That word our former masters titled upon us
“N*****”
This word was rooted from a depth
A depth of hate
A depth of inhumanity
A depth of ignorance
You think by changing some letters makes a difference?
Both of them
Either “nigga” or “n*****”
Both have discriminated
Yet you continuously swim
Swimming in your own sea of ignorance
You’re no better
No better than those who titled us with it
You have forgotten your potential
Your self-respect
Shame on them for labeling
Shame on you for blindly embracing
