The Reader
She hides in the pages,
runs her fingers over the words
like if she wishes really hard
they will become hers
She built herself a tower
I pleaded her to come down
She shook her head
and wrote me out
I think she’s crying,
because she’s running out of books
She knows how to make herself feel better
Clicks her heels together,
rides away with her prince
and turns another page
Writes another lie
That’s all she knows how to do
Brick by brick they’re tearing her out
Ripped away her happiness,
setting it to fire
All I see is her face
and the strained look in her eyes
She's losing her own battle
They’re telling me she’s better this way,
she needs to know the truth
There’s a real world outside the ones she makes up
and she needs to get a grip
I did the right thing
But God,
I think I hurt her
She has no more pages to hide in,
no more words to help herself through the day
There’s professionals for the help she needs
But what’s the point in helping her,
if I ruined all her happy endings?
I stand on the shore
and I watch her drowning
They’re holding me back
I need to save her because that's what friends do
But I have to let her learn how to live
But God,
I tried to save her
Please know,
I’m trying to save her
