Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Little girls,

They want to be

A perfect ballerina

They twirl

And leap

And bend

And kick

And curtsy at the end

But when they go

To put on that tutu

They look down at their tummies

Ballerinas don’t have tummies

That stick outside their hips

Then little girls

They eat no more

To try to loose a pound

First mother asks

Then mother cries

When she finds out why

Mother sits her little girl down

And asks her what is wrong

She says she’s ugly, fat, and dumb

Mother asks herself where she went wrong

She tries to tell that little girl

That what she thinks is wrong

She tells her child that she is

Beautiful, smart and loved

Little girl walks to her room

And a single tear rolls down

Even though her mother tried

The damage has already been done

Now she cuts

Instead of cries

At the harsh words said by peers

She feels worthless

And unloved

She’s a shell of her former self

She looks in the mirror

Then down at her wrists

She hates what she has done

But that was the night

She cried and cried

But did not say good-bye

She skipped school that next day

To tell her mom

Of the scars that she had made

And only now

Did she have the courage

To reach a hand out for help

Now that little girl is getting older

In fact she turned 16

Now she smiles

And isn't afraid

And she saves the lives of others

This poem is kind of my story. I did ballet for 10 years. I developed eating disorders which lead to self-harm. I just wanted to share that life is beautiful, and tomorrow is worth waking up for.

To love is to be vulnerable; Triumph is born out of struggle; We notice shadows most when they stand alone in the midst of overwhelming light.

This very beautiful, inspiring, and just all in all, amazing. I don't know what to say, except that your poem is full of emotion and you. You're a treasure, and I hope you know that already! You're a wonderful person and writer. Thank you for sharing this!

This poem is amazingly beautiful. Sad but very strong and meaningful. I just love it when you get to go through a lot of struggles and end up getting over them after all cuz you've strong enough to fight. Then comes the moment when you get the chance to help others so they won't have to do the same mistakes. I think that's beauty of getting over hard times cuz you get help and see yourself through their kives. "And she saves the lives of others" that's what you meant right? Anyways! Your poem was very poetic simply. So please keep it up and never stop writing cuz this is awesome!! I'm sure a lot of girls can relate to your story. Don't be ashamed to share it. Be proud of it cuz you managed to get through. Wowww I talked a lot sorry ^_^ :P 5 stars no doubt. Thanks for sharing this.
