Whatever You May Do
Whatever you may do, loved one
Don't believe what they tell you
Don't believe them when they tell you
that you hold no beauty, no grace
Don't believe them when they tell you
That your soul cannot shatter the sky
into a thousand pieces
Don't believe them when they tell you
that you don't steal the light from the sun at night
or that hope is a sealed box with no way out
or that your lover's eyes are simply one color
Loved one,
Your heart is a spectrum or If's, Do's and Have Done's
And you haven't yet felt your own beauty
seep through your bones
So whatever you may do,
Don't believe what they tell you
Because only the stars will tell you
That you don't have what it takes to be the moon.

In a time when society is fuelled by low self confidence, it is common to see friends and loved ones fall into a pit of self-questioning and hopelessness. I wrote this poem to remind myself and the people around me that things are not always as they seem, and that it is vital to continue to approach life with a sense of curiosity, and throw away any idea of normalcy that people may plant into your head. The world is beautiful because everyone has a rare gift, and if we all tuned in and nurtured it rather than feeding this existing chain of negativity, I can only imagine how promising it would be!
