Winter in Maine
Our lips broken and cracked,
match the blue of the frozen waters
buried under the snow.
Clinging to artificial warmth,
we grow closer together,
and wonder if the visibility
of our heavy breathing
gives away the secrets
we’ve tried so hard to hide.
We stay hidden until the flowers wake up,
shaking off their frost and
vowing to keep us safe for another year.
