The Mind of a Child
On hot, sticky summer afternoons,
I would pretend.
I would imagine the pool was a lake,
With snakes hiding in the nearby tall grass.
My ruler was a wand,
And I, a wizard.
I pretended that in my hands was a violin,
Rosin dusting over the floor as I played.
One time,
The pool pump was a magic machine that made cupcakes,
Everybody took as much as they liked.
But of all my imagining and pretending,
My favorite by far,
Was you.
