And I Burn
February 2, 2016
I light a match.
It springs to life and greets me.
The heat caresses my fingers.
The fire whispers sweet promises to me of love and caring
It promises not to bite me.
It asks, no begs me to let it feed, to let it grow.
So I do.
I stare up at the raging inferno.
The fire laughs at me.
It cackles.
It promised love but brought destruction.
And the one thing that was not human.
The one thing I loved.
The one thing that I trusted.
Betrayed me.
And I burn.

nice poem very detailed in your work
It hints at something insightful. I suppose there's a number of ways to interpret this, and that's what makes for good poetry. So here's my spin: it's about the danger of ideas, particularly heretical ones. A righteous person who entertains doubts about the truth of his religion might easily find himself spiraling down a (depending on your view) self-destruction. That's how I saw it, at least. On to the poem itself. There are a couple issues I have with the meter. I know it's free verse, but there's a jarring bite to the break of rhythm (unless that's the effect you were going for, in which case, congratulations). For example, in the first two lines, you were going for an iambic meter (i/LIGHT/a/MATCH; it/SPRINGS/to/LIFE/and/GREETS/me), but in the fourth line, you suddenly switch: the/FIRE/WHIS/pers... It's not really that big of an issue, especially in free verse, but it's a thing you might want to pay attention to, in case you unintentionally jolt your readers. You could also step up the imagery here. I'm sure you're above lines like, "the fire laughs at me". But all-in-all, this isn't a bad poem by any measure, and I'll eagerly await more of your poetry.
