Hopes of a Broken Reich
Feet burning like I walk on coals,
treading lightly does nothing
to ease the pain of this frightful train.
Masses of blue-band Yiddish screams beg for water,
crying for a plague to sweep the iron fist
of the second coming of Egypt.
Like locusts these pale-faced blonde
terrors devour our peace,
devour our hope,
devour our faith,
feeding on these jüdisch fears.
Swollen bellies bump neighbors’ backs
with the force of the wind against blight-ridden grass.
Each man groaning, each child in tears,
the walking continues-
every mile forty days and forty nights of torment,
6,000 years worth of wishes for peace and family.
Souls turn to darkness and dreamless good nights
to purge the evil seeping into their bones,
exuded by the repugnant
Wehrmacht psy in uniform
baying at their heels.
We wish our hopes away to America,
they wing their way to the cities
of New York, Florida, and California.
We wish away the dreams of our huddled masses
shuffling down the road to injustice,
Lady Liberty a shadow in the back of minds
who wish only to see another dawn.
Those who are strong lift those who
cannot stand to continue,
ragged blisters and gaunt faces markings of those
who bear scars deeper than tissue.
