"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Suess

I am a canary in a coal mine
singing softly to myself
while my life is on the line

fish in a barrel,
bird in a cage,
what difference does it make?

I wait for the bitter kiss of death
to steal me away
laced with the sweetness of murderer’s breath

I am only a sign
nothing more
only here to wait
for my unfortunate feathered fate

The author's comments:

I got my inspiration from something my 3rd grade teacher said about how coal miners used to use birds to indicate wether or not there was enough oxygen present. When the singing stopped, the miners knew the bird had died and they were in danger too.
