chameleons
We were chameleons, transforming from stiff and silent to wild, unsettled nighttime creatures in the mere blink of an eye. And we would dance among the smoke, hair flying in swirls of browns and blacks, until the soles of out feet burned with fatigue. The moon, huge and golden in the fierce summer heat, would seem to wink along with our frenzied steps. We’d hung fairy lights in a myriad of rainbow hues along the chipped rafters, and they glimmered and glinted until the lavender beginnings of dawn.
