I wait

others rush

catching a train, hailing a taxi

hurrying home, scurrying fast to a dinner date, running to their lover

but I wait

you said you would be here-- I check my watch-- forty-five minutes ago

now forty-six

everyone is rushing to and fro

grabbing their umbrellas, clutching their handbags, holding tight to their lover's hand

but my hands are not held by anything

nor do my hands hold anything

I am unheld and unholding

waiting

waiting

everyone has somewhere to go, something to hold, someone to be with

but I am nothing more than a forgotton thing
