Nothing After School
Yeah right,
What a joke,
I dream of nothing to do after school as my collapsing eyes are half shut and my work half completed,
Having nothing to do is what adults believe,
Adults foolish enough to make the mistake Dumbledore calls the biggest mistake an adult can make,
To forget what it's like to be young,
Teenagers could never have responsibilities beyond school,
And we have all the time in the world,
Decades of bright futures ahead of us,
We are young and vibrant sponges waiting to soak anything up,
Right?
It's not like we have 7 hours of school,
Homework and studying galore,
Sports,
Chores,
Jobs,
Lessons requiring daily practice,
Clubs,
Family commitments,
Appointments,
Except that’s not the case,
We wake up from 4-6am,
Are in school for 7 hours,
Then we attempt to obtain…
Homework and studying galore,
Sports,
Chores,
Jobs,
Lessons that require daily practice,
Clubs,
Family commitments,
Appointments,
And don’t forget the ignored facts that…
Our melatonin levels makes going to sleep before 11pm unattainable,
We should be getting 9-10hrs of sleep,
Most of us only get 7 on a good night,
Where, in this schedule you have created, do our minds get a break?
Where, in this schedule you have created, do we get to be a kid?
Go to the movies,
Hang out with friends,
Create memories of ill-advised things we did when we were young,
This can’t be kept up for long,
It's unreasonable to ask of us,
We need more sleep,
As well as less homework
Less pressure on our tests,
And more understanding and listening,
It’s essential that schools start later in the day,
The science is there,
Our biology is proof,
Listen to Dumbledore,
Listen to us,
Understand and respect our limits,
And remember what it's like to be young again,
Learn how it's different now then when you were our ages,
But now it's up to you as our guardians and leaders to make a change for the better
