dead upon the battlefield
I'm walking down the battlefield beside me is my friend
We're laughing and were joking till they hit
Were hiding under rocks from that heavy fire
I know that soon it's just too late

My best friend sticks his head out as I scream at him
A bullet passing over him so close
he looks at me and I at him with worry in his eyes
and ask me when he'll see his wife again

I sit there and I stare at him at bullets scream by us
one hits him in the heart and I just fall
I'm looking right into his eyes asking why it's him
saying his name over and over in my mind

Oh why him instead of me oh why must he be dead
When you could just have taken me
Oh why him instead of me I'm right here waiting now
Please take me home with my best friend tonight

I'm wandering the battlefield with my head to the ground
Carrying my best friend on my back
There's sargents telling me to cover in the dunes
But all I do is stare at them right back

The time flies by I don't know why I'm even in this war
I look around me all I see are dead and gone
My best friend still upon my back I carry on
To rest his body in the ground I sit

waiting day and night I sit and wait it's all I want to do
I'm waiting for the lord to take me home
one by one the soldiers die around me I don't care
Because my best friend's right beside my head

Oh why him instead of me oh why must he be dead
When you could just have taken me
Oh why him instead of me I'm right here waiting now
Please take me home with my best friend tonight

A person comes to take me home he says not much to do
I curse him hard and tell him to back off
he gives a gentle sigh at me and walks away again
and tells me that it'll be all right

I cry to sleep upon the ground I cry with my dead friend
Why had the war claimed his good soul
If God was good then why did he just have to take away
The only person that had meant so much

The next sunrise it's time to go to leave it all behind
It's time to bury my dead friend as well
As tears roll down my puffy eyes I look into his eyes
and wonder, oh I wonder what I'll say

Oh why him instead of me oh why must he be dead
When you could just have taken me
Oh why him instead of me I'm right here waiting now
Please take me home with my best friend tonight
