You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

I can hear the voices trembling
And I see the hands they shake
Open to the fifteenth verse
And read upon the alter
And she says "please be with him
He didn't know any better
He was raised by my working hands
And we fought against the weather

But it came down like a hard rain
And we tried to wipe the streaks
It smeared over our vision
And it ran down his cheeks"
She broke down on the alter
And I rushed to help her stand
Her head fell backwards gently
And she softly grabbed my hand

We stood up strong together
I held her weight upon mine
For I knew she only appeared strong
Her heart was far more kind
They lowered the arms
And it fell beneath the earth
She stood like a mother
Who had just given birth

Full of pride and tears in her eyes
And tired, needing rest
But she refused to cry willingly
Her baby bird had left the nest
His shell lay broken beneath her
Still beautiful with all the cracks
She kissed his face one more time
Then she turned her back

She said "Lord, please be with him
He didn't know any better
He was raised by my working hands
And we fought against the weather."
