When you're walking down a lonely road,

And you feel as though you've no place to go,

Another stranger, you might find,

He once was a good friend of mine.

You'll start talking about something sad,

And you'll like it when he takes your hand.

He'll calm you softly, say, "Come on, let's go,"

And lead you right on down that lonely road

And he's all dressed in black,

But you like to have a friend at your back,

And you start to follow him home,

How are you to know?

Right about now, this time last year,

He held me close and whispered in my ear,

I couldn't tell you everything he said,

But he talked sweet and long and filled my head.

I spent some time breaking sticks with stones,

Turns out words can break your bones.

You wind up racing down a one way street,

You get so good you forget you want to leave.

And you're all dressed in black.

And you never had a friend at your back.

And you're never going home.

How were you to know?

How were you to know?

How were you to know?

I love this. It's really emotional and I'm sure anyone could find a way to connect to it. People can be deceiving (or sometimes very obvious but those darn feelings blind you).
