Left Behind
Wings flicker cold, soft whispr’ng feathers dull,
Behind rusting bars of imprisonment.
The dreary life of caged is doldrums lulled,
Yet promised comfort gave abandonment.
A splendid world of foolproof motion kept
These creatures sure and faithful, full of song,
Affectionate companions, day by day, not trapped,
‘Til masters unexpected did them wrong,
Forsaking trust of those belov’d once,
Forgotten victims—empty eyes so dead.
Now they perch wretched, silent, looks askance,
But few in countless bloomers cheer fled.
If only from this iv’ry tower freed
These fowl would never cages safe concede.
